These are the possibilities<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Depending on how long your Certificate of Competency has been expired, different routes apply to obtain a valid certificate again.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ba9b5d;\"><strong>Certificate of Competency expired for less than 5 years<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>If your Certificate of Competency has been invalid for less than five years, there are three ways to obtain a valid certificate again:<\/p>\n<ol role=\"list\" start=\"1\">\n<li><span tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\" data-url=\"ca:\/\/s?q=Meer_uitleg_over_kennisbewijs\">Obtain a new certificate of knowledge<\/span>: you retake the required examination.<\/li>\n<li><span tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\" data-url=\"ca:\/\/s?q=Meer_uitleg_over_vaartijd_eisen\">Gain sea service<\/span>: at least 3 months of relevant experience within the 6 months prior to the application.<\/li>\n<li><span tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\" data-url=\"ca:\/\/s?q=Wat_is_een_ambtshalve_vaarbevoegdheidsbewijs\">Use an ex-officio Certificate of Competency<\/span>: this allows you to gain 3 months of sea service in a lower position than the one for which your expired certificate was valid.\n<ul role=\"list\">\n<li><em>Please note:<\/em> a captain cannot sail as chief mate with an ex-officio Certificate of Competency, because the chief mate is the captain&#8217;s substitute.
